About Nil ratan sircar
Life Story of Nil Ratan Sircar
Nil Ratan Sircar was born on October 1, 1861, in Netra village of South 24 Parganas district, Bengal. He was the son of Nandalal Sircar, a poor farmer who later settled in Jaynagar. His mother, Rebati Bani, died when he was a child from a mysterious illness that sparked his interest in medicine. He grew up with his maternal relatives in Netra and received his early education at Chatra Nandalal Institution in Hooghly.

He moved to Calcutta to pursue his medical career and studied at Campbell Medical College, where he obtained a vernacular diploma in medicine in 1879. He won a scholarship and earned his M.B., M.A., and M.D. degrees from the University of Calcutta between 1888 and 1890. He married Nirmala, the daughter of a Brahmo missionary, in 1888 and became a member of the Brahmo Samaj. They had six children, five daughters and one son.

Sircar soon became a leading Indian consulting physician and treated patients from all walks of life, including the ruling heads of state in neighbouring countries. He was also a pioneer of medical education and research in India and contributed to the establishment and administration of various national institutes of science in Bengal, such as Bose Institute, Carmichael Medical College, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, and Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine. He was also involved in the swadeshi movement and supported the development of indigenous industries and commerce.

He was awarded honorary DCL by University of Oxford and LL.D by University of Edinburgh for his achievements in medicine and science. He was also knighted by the British government in 1922. He was a generous philanthropist and donated large sums of money to various educational and social causes. He died on May 18, 1943, in Calcutta at the age of 81.

Nil Ratan Sircar was a remarkable man who dedicated his life to the service of humanity and the advancement of science. He was an inspiration to many generations of Indians who followed his footsteps in the fields of medicine, education, and nationalism. He is remembered as one of the greatest sons of Bengal and India.
